Beach Walk

My drift took me across a bridge and to the sun and sand of the beautiful Lake Michigan. Here I came across a group of people hitting a volleyball back and fourth. It felt like a nice beach get together with their coolers and music. I walked on by and got closer to the water where suddenly the music stopped and a mysterious thumping started.

Utrecht Art Supply‎

While walking I decided to deviate from my original map just a little to get a few different sounds by taking an extra street or two. I walked onto Farwell Ave when I came across an art store called Utrecht Art Supply‎. I am very interested in art and wanted to explore this new found store so I decided I would hit record just before I entered. I wasn't sure what types of sounds I would get walking through this store but it seemed to be a good mixture of different textured sounds.

You can hear the buzz of the back lights and the workers helping costumers while working on various projects in the store.

State of Emergency

I was about to cross the bridge over the Milwaukee River to travel over into River West when I could hear the sound of sirens approaching unsure the source or direction it was coming from. I hit recorded when a noticed a firetruck was about to cross the bridge. I watched as cars pulled to the shoulders as I stood across the street from the pool of the local high school. I could only imagine the type of emergency that was occuring. The rush of sounds and the thoughts of the people involved.

Motor Noises

My drift brought be to an intersection and in order to continue I crossed the street. Once I did I heard a buzz of an A/C so I decided to start recording when suddenly mopeds went by me. A car was approaching so I decided to wait til it passed to stop but it made a surprising noise of screeching tires and breaks. The driver must have been going to fast as it approached the round about in the middle of the intersection.

Milwaukee River View

This is a sound I had the idea of capturing but didn't think it would be possible. I found a trail that lead into the woods. With the sounds around me amplified it was a whole new experience walking through the woods. I eventually could hear the sound of water as I walked deeper in to the woods. I stopped to record the sounds along the shore close to a fisherman. Surrounded by nature with the rush of trees, crickets, and running water.

The Art of Stragizing

To determine my route for my drift I decided to print off a map of the Wisconsin, Milwaukee area near the UWM campus. I decided that I would start at my place of residence for the beginning of my drift walk. From there on the map I picked out several locations to travel to and then randomly linked the together with the streets.

  • Wisconsin River
  • Cream City Collective
  • E. North St.
  • Lake Michigan
  • Klotsche Fitness Center
I followed the map I created for the majority of my walk. There were a few regions that I thought would be more interesting to deviate from the map. Instead of walking along a busy street for a long ways I decided that I would walk through a park. Also there were a few streets that I missed while walking so I went on different streets.

Drift Mapping

After several days of trying and poor weather forcing me to post pone my walk, on Saturday October 4th, 2008 I was able to venture out for my first drift. My location was the east side of Milwaukee, WI. The majority of my walk took place south of the University of Milwaukee campus. I went as far west as Holton St., as far south as E. North St. and as far east as I could walk before going into Lake Michigan. This Drift blog with feature several different sounds that I observed and recorded while out on this walk.

I encounted several unexpected situations and sounds that you will sure to beable to hear soon.

For a specific layout and streets of my drift walk you may also see a google.map version here.
(or copy http://tinyurl.com/5yulwx into your web browser.)

The version of my walk shown above was the map I used to guide me on my walk with my predetermined layout. For the most part I stayed very close to that map. The map pieces were construced through different clips of google.map and printed for reference.
